Spared, inmate thinks of his mom At 10 a.m. yesterday, the exact hour that a lethal dose of pentobarbital was supposed to be flowing into his veins at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, Shawn Hawkins was sitting in a room 90 miles away. Very much alive, Hawkins looked out a window at the Warren Correctional Institution. He saw bright sunshine, a patch of green grass and a parking lot outside a fence topped with curled razor wire. "I feel blessed," Hawkins said in an interview with The Dispatch. "Knowing that my family doesn't have to endure the loss of me means everything, especially since my mom already lost two of her kids. I would have been the third." Hawkins said he was not afraid to die. Knowing when he was supposed to die actually helped, he said. Update A Message from Shawn's Uncle Hello Everyone! Once again, my nephew Shawn Hawkins needs your help. Shawn will be requesting clemency in early April, 2014 for the Governor of Ohio to grant him clemency and free him from the chains of the horrible sentence of Life Without Parole and grant him his long overdue and much deserved freedom. As most of you may recall, almost three years ago Shawn came within 6 days of being executed for two horrific murders that he has steadfastly maintained his innocence from day one and for over 21 years. The Honorable Governor of Ohio, John Kasich carefully reviewed the facts of the case and exercised great wisdom in sparing Shawn's life based on the many doubts he had concerning Shawn's involvement in this crime. We are now asking Governor Kasich to complete the task he began in saving Shawn's life by granting him his freedom. We need your help by clicking on the following link, and signing his petition which will be forwarded to Governor Kasich on Shawn's behalf. www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Governor_John_Kasich_Grant_clemency_to_Shawn_Hawkins_reconsider_his_LWOP_Sentence In addition we are asking you to write a brief letter of support which will be mailed to the parole board for Shawn. I have attached a sample letter as a guide to use in drafting your letter to the parole board. Feel free to use your own words or use the guide when writing this letter. Please mail your support letters directly to Shawn's trial attorney. Anthony G. Covatta One West Fourth St. Suite 2400 Cincinnati, OH 45202 acovatta@drewlaw.com Once again, our family remains extremely grateful and thankful for all of your help, love and support and anything you feel necessary to spread the word or sign the petition is appreciated. You may also visit Shawn's webpage at Shawnhawkins@wordpress.com SAMPLE LETTER Dear Honorable Board Members: I am a supporter of Shawn Hawkins, and I have taken the time to review a lot of the facts and circumstances of his case. I know him to be a kind, caring, thoughtful individual, and not someone who is capable of the crime in which he has been convicted. Since being wrongfully imprisoned he has demonstrated nothing but a continual process of growth in his character and person. His exemplary prison history is a direct reflection of his personal growth and character building. In regards to the evidence used to convict Shawn, it is in my opinion extremely disturbing to think that such unreliable and untrustworthy evidence could send a person to death row for 21 years and almost cause him to be executed. The same applies to that of having to spend the rest of his life in prison. If this Honorable Board could recommend that Shawn not be executed based on the unreliability and untrustworthiness of the facts and circumstances of his case, then you should once again afford him a favorable recommendation for clemency a second time. As a supporter of Shawn’s I request clemency to be recommended, so that he can finally enjoy the freedom that his has so deserved for 20 plus years now. I thank you for your time and consideration in this very important matter. Sincerely,
