Much evidence points to Brett Hartmann as the man who murdered Winda Snipes in September 1997. Hartmann has been convicted of the crime. He sits on death row, his execution by lethal injection scheduled for April 7. No surprise then that Sherri Bevan Walsh, the Summit County prosecutor, rejected a request from Hartmann for DNA testing of hairs at the crime scene, plus a condom and fingerprints on an electric clock. And yet, granting the request hardly would have been unreasonable. After all, Walsh weathered the Clarence Elkins episode, Elkins serving seven years in prison for a murder he did not commit. An appropriately humbled prosecutor would be less defiant today. Why not allow the testing? And confirm the guilt of Brett Hartmann? Or open the way to knowing more — before putting a man to death? www.ohio.com/editorial/opinions/41874272.htmlAs with all Akron Beacon articles there is a comment section.
