You are all encouraged to attend the all-day conference at Cleveland State University's Main Classroom Building on Saturday, Feb. 26, called the Prison Emergency Summit. Hosted by the Lucasville Uprising Freedom Network with the support of many other groups, it will of course call for the overturning of the wrongful convictions of the death-sentenced prisoners who were alleged to be leaders of the 1993 rebellion at Southern Ohio Correction Facility.
In addition there will be a presentation followed by a workshop specifically focused on ending the death penalty in Ohio. Since Northeast Ohio OTSE organizer Adrian Griffin cannot attend, long-time anti-death penalty activist Shirley Saunders was asked to speak. Shirley has 15 pen-pals on death row, one of whom, Kenneth Smith, was just given an execution date in July. Former pen-pals of Shirley's have been executed as well. The workshop is geared toward developing an action plan. We are encouraging all ideas and suggestions. We will have information available on a new legislative campaign to stop executions, with an upcoming Lobby Your Legislators Week.
Please attend and participate. We need your support, your views and your experience. Just your presence at this conference will add a great deal.
The conference takes place in Lecture Hall #201 in the Main Classroom Building at 1899 E.22nd Street at Chester Avenue, with break-out discussion groups in classrooms across the hall. The hall will have information tables of at least ten organizations, including the ACLU, Ohio-Cure and others. Arrive at 9:00 am for registration, breakfast refreshments, and networking at the information tables.
The presentations will begin at 10:00 am, with the showing of the new documentary, "Dark Little Secret", by Youngstown filmmaker D Jones at 11:30 am. Lunch will be provided. The presentation by Shirley Saunders will be at 1:20 pm with the small group discussion immediately following.
There is no registration fee but free will donations are gratefully accepted. We hope to see you at this important event.
