Execution date sought for 1986 Rootstown murder Prosecutors have asked the Ohio Supreme Court to set an execution date for a man who killed a Portage County teen more than 25 years ago. Mark Wiles was sentenced to death in January 1986 for the aggravated murder of 15-year-old Mark Klima in August of the previous year. In a filing with the state’s high court, Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci and Assistant Prosecutor Pamela Holder wrote that Wiles had exhausted his state and federal reviews and had not sought a stay of the death sentence, so an execution date was in order. Clemency hearing set for inmate Mark Wiles The Ohio Parole Board has scheduled a clemency hearing for death row inmate Mark Wiles, 48, formerly of Portage County. Wiles is sentenced to die April 18 by lethal injection for for killing 15-year-old Mark Klima at a farmhouse in Rootstown during a 1985 burglary. The parole board has scheduled a clemency hearing for 9 a.m. Thursday at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction in Columbus. Wiles last month asked a federal judge to delay his April execution while the state's lethal injection procedures are reviewed. The request is among a series of such filings that have led to an unofficial moratorium on executions in the state. Federal courts have delayed two other executions this year over concerns that Ohio deviates too often from its written lethal injection rules. www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/569016/News-in-brief.html?nav=5021

Execution date nears for murderer of Rootstown teen Prison officials are moving ahead with plans to execute a Portage County man who murdered a Rootstown teen more than 25 years ago, despite delays on other executions this year after a judge raised questions about the state’s lethal injection protocol. Mark Wiles will make his case for clemency before the state parole board next week in advance of his scheduled execution on April 18. “We have not been made aware of any postponement for the Wiles execution,” said JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. “We are moving forward with our preparations.” Whether Wiles makes the trip to the Death House at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility remains in question, however, as the state works to convince a federal judge that its execution procedures are constitutional. Mark Wiles faces an execution date of April 18th, 2012. Please take action TODAY! www.change.org/petitions/commute-the-death-sentence-of-mark-wilesMark Wiles was convicted of the August 1985 murder of Mark Klima. Mark was suspect from the beginning. He fled Ohio and ended up in Savannah, Georgia. He struggled with what he had done and contemplated suicide. He went so far as to write a suicide note. Instead, he turned himself in to the Savannah police. Mark waived counsel and confessed several times. To this day, he has never offered excuses for what he did. There was no forensic evidence connecting him to the crime. Without his confession, Mark would not have been convicted. Several reasons why clemency should be applied to this case: Acceptance of responsibility: Mark Wiles fully confessed and does not deny he alone murdered young Mark Klima, an innocent victim, of his selfish greed Good behavior in prison: Mark Wiles has been a model inmate. He also has helped a fellow inmate who had a stroke with that fellow’s hygiene and other daily needs. Sincere remorse and regret: Mark Wiles has had a gnawing distress from his guilt for the murder of Mark Klima. He has expressed this remorse and regret from the beginning. Mark Wiles would have pled guilty at trial had that been offered to him. Mark Wiles is not the “worst of the worst” We deeply sympathize with the family and friends of Mark Klima, but we respectfully offer that another death will neither heal nor resolve this tragedy. www.change.org/petitions/commute-the-death-sentence-of-mark-wiles

Condemned killer deserves a sentence of life in prison: Rev. Geoffrey A. Black On Wednesday, April 18, the state of Ohio is scheduled to execute Mark Wiles. Our governor, the Honorable John R. Kasich, holds the power to commute the sentence to life in prison. As the leader of the United Church of Christ, and as a man of faith, I ask the governor to show mercy and spare Mr. Wiles' life. The decision will certainly be a difficult one, but my faith in a loving God and the facts of Mr. Wiles' contrition and good acts over the past 27 years lead me to ask for mercy in his case. Faith leaders want mercy for Ohio death row inmate More than 200 religious leaders are asking Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) to spare a man scheduled for execution next week for fatally stabbing a 15-year-old boy during a farmhouse burglary. Ohioans to Stop Executions and People of Faith Against the Death Penalty say they submitted a Monday letter to Kasich on behalf of about 230 faith leaders. They ask that the sentence of 49-year-old Mark Wiles be commuted to life in prison without parole. The Ohio parole board has recommended against clemency. Wiles' attorney says he's remorseful and has accepted responsibility for his actions in the 1985 slaying in Portage County. The April 18 execution would be Ohio's first in six months after a federal judge ruled the state narrowly demonstrated it's serious about following its lethal injection procedures. www.onntv.com/content/stories/apexchange/2012/04/10/oh--death-penalty-ohio.html

Wiles set to die for Portage murder Mark Wiles spent his final day talking on the phone, visiting with family members and being served a special meal of pepperoni pizza with extra cheese, hours before his scheduled lethal injection this morning. Barring any last-minute court intervention, Wiles will be put to death at 10 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, the first inmate in five months to be executed following legal challenges to the state’s capital punishment protocols.
