Appeal denied, killer may get execution date

It's been 14 years since Jesse James Cowans, who had been let out of prison despite a life sentence for murdering a man in a wheelchair, strangled a 69-year-old woman and got the death penalty. But Cowans, 50, might finally get a date with the executioner.

His appeal to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court in Cincinnati was denied last week, and the U.S. Supreme Court is unlikely to hear the case, Clermont County Prosecutor Don White said Tuesday.

Heart attack kills Ohio death row inmate

The state says an inmate has died of a heart attack on Ohio's death row.

Jessie Cowans was sentenced to death for strangling 69-year-old Clara Swart in her home in Amelia in southwestern Ohio in 1996.

Ohio prisons spokesman Carlo LoParo said Cowans collapsed just outside of his cell at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown about 6:35 a.m. Tuesday morning and was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The 50-year-old Cowans lost his latest appeal before a federal appeals court in Cincinnati in April.

Deaths of natural causes on death row are rare but not unheard of, with five such deaths in Ohio in the past six years.
