Death penalty opponents plan walk from Lucasville to Columbus The final walk for Ohio inmates to the Death Chamber is 17 steps. Capital punishment opponents will walk 83 miles from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility at Lucasville to Columbus to protest the death penalty. The event is sponsored by Ohioans to Stop Executions and other organizations. It will begin at 8:30am on Oct. 4 and conclude Oct. 10, international World Day Against the Death Penalty. Walkers will stop in Portsmouth, Chillicothe, Circleville and Columbus (on Oct. 9) to discuss the death penalty. Among the walkers will be Terry Collins, former director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections who witnessed 33 executions; Derrick Jamison, exonerated from Death Row in 2005 after 20 years; Sam Reese Sheppard, son of Dr. Sam Sheppard, wrongly convicted for murdering his wife in Bay Village, Ohio, in 1954, and Rev. Jeff Hood, a Southern Baptist minister and author who was worked with convicted prisoners in Texas. Other sponsoring organizations are Scioto Peace & Justice Fellowship of Reconciliation, Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center, Footprints for Peace, and Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio.
