A presentation on "A Death Penalty We Can Live With" will be given on
Tuesday evening, March 11, 2008 at 7pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Scottsdale , AZ. The talk given by Judge Rudolph J. Gerber will address the issues of retribution, and if the death penalty really is a deterrence, the pain said to be involved during lethal injection, and is there really closure for victims’ families and society or not, as well as the history of the Death Penalty.
Judge Gerber has been an assistant professor of philosophy at Notre Dame University and St. Louis University (1967-1971). He has also taught law-related courses at Arizona State University , Phoenix College and Western International University . He was a private practitioner in both civil and criminal litigation prior to his appointment to the Arizona Superior Court by Governor Bruce Babbitt in 1979. There he served as a judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court until 1988. From 1988 until 2001 Judge Gerber served on the Arizona Court of Appeals and as a pro tem Justice for the Supreme Court of Arizona.
Since 2001 he has been a Special Counsel with Shughart, Thomson & Kilroy, P.C. in Phoenix . He has authored numerous books and articles on the legal system, and has spoken at the Annual Death Penalty Conferences held yearly at ASU. Judge Gerber holds a Ph.D. from the Institut Superiéur de Philosophie, Université de Louvain, Louvain , Belgium , and a J.D. in Law, from Notre Dame University in Indiana .
The talk will be held in Maguire Hall, located at the NE corner of Miller Rd. and 2nd St. in Scottsdale .
Admission is free, and complimentary refreshments will be provided. All are welcome!
