Slain Officer's Family Back In Appeals Court Wednesday, April 30, 2008 6:23 PM Updated: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 07:23 PM Video Print Story E-mail Story CINCINNATI — U.S. Court of Appeals judges heard arguments on Wednesday regarding the fate of a man convicted of killing a Columbus police officer. Officer Bryan Hurst, 33, was shot and killed in January 2005 while working special duty at a bank on the east side of Columbus, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported. Police later arrested Darryl Lawrence and charged him with Hurst's slaying. Lawrence was eventually convicted and a jury sentenced him to death. However, the sentence was thrown out by a federal judge who said jurors sentenced Lawrence to life behind bars for one part of the crime, and sentenced him to death for another. The judge called the split sentence arbitrary and irrational, Kocot reported. The Hurst family appealed the ruling and the case moved to appeals court.
