The stories behind the body art of Northeast Ohio
Jess McFall, 24, law student, University of Akron
Number of tattoos: Four -- "but it depends how you count."
Where they are: Right biceps, inside left middle finger.
Ink master: Brian McFadden, Good Life Tattoos and Piercings, Akron.
Estimated cost: $300.
Story: "My right biceps is an ongoing project that I add to as things strike me -- and I'll keep it up until I run out of room!
"The largest portion reads, The very essence of civil liberty consists in the right of every individual to claim the protection of the laws.' That represents a line from the Supreme Court case Marbury v. Madison. One of my first assignments in constitutional law was to pick a favorite line from that case. It seemed to embody my view of the purpose of the law, so I decided to make it permanent.
"Another portion reads, KNOW GOOD.' It's pretentiously clever,' as I like to say. It's a play on no good.'
"Just above my elbow, wrapped around my biceps is a series of chemical formulas. After some contact with inmates on death row and attorneys who work for them, I memorialized my opposition to the death penalty with the chemical compounds of the drugs given during lethal injection. My hope is that someday, someone will ask me what the chemicals are for, and my answer will be, Well, nothing anymore.' "
Next tattoo: "Some words to continue on my wordplay of know good,' probably words like justice, peace, eternity' -- concepts that we want to know' but that are also lacking a lot in the world."
-- As told to John Campanelli, Plain Dealer Reporter
