Tell Governor Strickland You Need to Talk To Him
October 10, 2010 is World Day Against the Death Penalty!
Please join Ohioans to Stop Executions (OTSE) in recognizing World Day Against the Death Penalty by submitting an electronic message to Governor Strickland stating that you want capital punishment to end in Ohio. The video messages will be collected from across the state and complied onto a DVD which will then be submitted to the governor before October 10th.
Stop by the Peaslee Neighborhood Center (215 E. 14th St., Cincinnati 45202) on Tuesday, September 28th anytime between 4-6:30 p.m. to film your short message to Governor Strickland. Given the election season as well as two recent death row commutations, now is a crucial time for him to hear that there is support to abolish capital punishment!
If you cannot make it on the 28th, you may send your message to Renee Berlon at otse.org@gmail.com in one of the following formats: “.mov”, “mpeg-5” or “dv.” Messages should be kept UNDER (or as close to) 30 seconds. To ensure that your clip is included on the DVD, please send it to Renee by Friday, October 1st. For your convenience, you will find below some “talking points” to help you formulate your message.
Thank you for your help. Please contact Renee at OTSE with any questions at (513) 543-1585.
Sample Talking Points
“Hello, my name is __________. I’m from ______, Ohio, and I oppose the death penalty…”
[you can either stop here or continue to say why you oppose the death penalty]
…because…

- It detracts from resources that could be better spent on:
Victims’ services,
Crime prevention programs,
More law enforcement,
Our education system,
Etc.
We risk the chance of executing an innocent person.
It often prolongs pain for murder victims’ family members.
The death penalty does not deter crime – states that have the death penalty typically have higher murder rates than states that do not have the death penalty.
It is carried out disproportionately in terms of race, class, and geography.
